Place: Latham Island (25 March 2006)
Boat: Kelly II (Jason and Mady)

Mate: Habbasi, Bernard
Kelly II, the 26 ft Caribbean
owned by Jason Alexiou and Maddalena Martinengo, has managed to achieve another
World Record, while fishing out off Latham
Island, hooking up and boating a nice Dogtooth Tuna of 71.5 kg on 30 lbs.

The fishing was very good with
several Giant Trevally on the 25/30 kilo range
hooking up and a few dogtooth already caught.
Most of the fish were hooked on live rainbow runner trolled along the drop
off or by trolling lures in between live baits.
While one dogtooth was being fought another dogtooth came up on
the surface. A jig was dropped down as fast as possible and retrieved. The hook up was
immediate. The fish took several determined runs trying to cut off the line
on the reef but we were lucky and after 30/40 minutes the fish was landed.
Congratulations
to Jason Alexiou and to the crew of Kelly
II
Jason Alexiou is an excellent
fisherman which has transformed his passion into his living, working for
several charter operations along the coast since the age of 16.
His involvement does not stop
into the charter business only, but he is also an I.G.F.A. Representative for Tanzania and he has
been several times the Fishing Secretary for the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club (standing position).
During his fishing
experiences, he has fished extensively, all along the Tanzanian coast,
getting to know all the best fishing areas, from North to South; from the Pemba Channel, down through to Kilwa
and Mtwara; but his prime choice and his favourite fishing ground is with no exception Latham
Island.
Latham Island is without doubt the best fishing spot in the whole
of Tanzania, aggregating an enormous amount of reef and pelagic fish along its 15 nautical miles of reefs and
sea mountains.
All year long you can get excellent catches.
From a minimum catch of 200 kilo during the lower season, during June, May, July up to catches of over 800 kilo during the best season (Yellowfin tuna: September/October and Reef fish:
February/March/April)(our smallest catch ever at Latham was around 380/400 kg).
The best catch in a day in Latham Island was 1478 kilo, done
on Kelly II (Jason Alexiou, Jasper Samaras, Habbasi and Maddalena Martinengo as skipper).
The second best catch in Latham was 1472 kilo, done on Miss Linda owned by
Luke Samaras (Alexiou, Maddalena Martinengo, Ali and Jasper Samaras as skipper).
And again, the third best catch in Latham was 1300 kilo, done on Kelly II
(Jason Alexiou, Habbasi,
Bernard and Maddalena Martinengo as skipper).
It is here at Latham Island, that, J.J. thanks to his skills
and the
profuse knowledge of the area, made achieve several World Record to the
boats he was fishing from (without counting the All Africa Records and the
Tanzanian Records):
